ESL 102: Accelerated Academic ESL II is the second course in Kingsborough’s two-semester ESL sequence. This course strengthens the advanced academic English skills students need for success in college-level reading and writing. Students will engage with a wide range of genres and mediums to build critical reading comprehension, vocabulary development, and analytical thinking.

Through three major formal writing projects (Process Analysis, Definition, and Argument essays), students will practice paragraph and essay organization, sentence variety, cohesion, academic tone, and the integration of credible sources using MLA citation conventions. Students will also develop listening, speaking, and digital literacy skills through discussions, presentations, and multimodal learning tasks.

The course culminates in a final digital portfolio that showcases revised academic writing, reflection on growth, and a multimedia component demonstrating readiness for college composition coursework.

Bypassing ESL 102

Students are placed in ESL based on their Accuplacer score and our placement criteria are ironclad and cannot be bypassed, no matter how much the student protests. Per the CUNY Central Testing Office, students are not permitted to challenge their Accuplacer score or retake the test.

For reference, here are the Kingsborough-specific placement criteria:

  • Composite 65 and under: ESL 8203 or CLIP
  • Composite 66-97/Writeplacer 3-4: ESL 101
  • Composite 98-104/Writeplacer 4-5: ENG 12/AO
  • Composite 105+: ENG 12

Students cannot bypass the ESL sequence if their Accuplacer score does not meet the benchmark. Appealing to Kristine and Neil, or Annie del Principe (Chairperson of the English Department), will not result in a change of placement.

Students who pass ESL 102 are considered “proficient” and thus are placed in ENG 12. However, an instructor might feel that ENG 12 AO, with its extra two hours of instruction is a better choice. If so, this will be communicated to the student at the end of the semester, and the students’ advisor will be notified of their recommendation through Navigate.
